Thank you for another excellent analysis. One question: having retired from active practice prior to the frequent installation of shunts, I haven't followed the details very closely; how long do the "eluting" stents continue to give off medication?

Great question. This varies based on the polymer coating but generally speaking most of the drug will be released within weeks to 2-3 months.

Thank you. Just noticed my typo---"shunts" instead of stents. Am I correct in assuming that the purpose of the drug is to counteract immediate intimal reaction to stent placement?

Immediate and late. The early phase of inflammatory response from endothelial denudation and injury occurs within 24-48 hours. Smooth muscle proliferation can be detected about 14 days after stenting but usually peaks 1-6 months.
